Viability is one of the central terms of cybernetics. A system (e.g. an enterprise as a purpose oriented social system) is viable (from the cybernetic point of view) when it has its relevant complexity “under control”. This manifests itself by the system’s ability to sustain its identity in a changing environment through adaption, learning and development. In the view of the system oriented management the securing of the viability of an institution is the basic task of its management.
